ResumoPart of the Amazon Basin in Brazil is going to be mapped by radar during the execution of the "RADAM Project" sponsored by the "Departamento Nacional da Producao Mineral" (Brazilian Geological Survey). This project has several objectives namely: topography and geologic mapping, vegetation and soil survey, and regional development planning. This paper is an attempt to put together the geologic information available on this area and to present a summary of the previous works. Very few studies are published in the Brazilian Geological literature about this part of the Amazon region, and even a smaller number is found in the foreign literature. It should be mentioned also that most of the information was collected along the major rivers, which provide the easiest access to much of the interior, or is based on photogeologic interpretation. The author shows in a physicalmap of South America the location of areas that have been mapped or studied previously with relatively greater detail. The numbers used to designate these areas in the map refer to the entries in the reference list. The scale of the maps is mentioned in the summaries and the scale, type, and origin of aerial photographs used to prepare the maps are listed if the information was available.
